SA – SHRM Mentor Program
Purpose
The mentor program through SA SHRM is designed to encourage a relationship between more experienced members (Mentors) to help and guide the less experienced and knowledgeable members (Mentee) and to learn from each other. We believe the impact of the individual mentees learning from mentors in a one – on – one relationship will build trust and respect. The program will provide skill development and learning opportunities to less senior professionals. Mentors in the program will gain new perspective and insight as a result of their new relationships and prepare them for further growth opportunities within their career.
Goals of the Mentor Program
-
To help prepare a mentee for new opportunities.
-
To help the new employee adjust to a new role/ culture and/or new work environment.
-
To encourage proper knowledge transfer from seasoned employee to newer employee.
What is a Mentor?
A Mentor is an experienced HR Professional who has a good understanding of the responsibilities and duties of position of the mentee. The mentors are willing to provide time, be accessible and Partner/Support the new employee during a designated time. The ideal mentor is a resource who is friendly, interpersonally effective, demonstrates patience, and is a positive role model with effective communication skills.
Who can be a Mentor?
SA SHRM Members can either volunteer or be asked to participate in the program as a Mentor and can be assigned by the board. The designated board member is expected to review the program guidelines with the volunteering mentor prior to them meeting the mentee. The orientation of the mentor will include a discussion on the program goals and expectations of them in their role.
Timeline of Program
The mentor/ Mentee relationship will last a minimum of 6 months. It is expected that the Mentee and Mentor have one coffee date, lunch, or phone call a month to help with the Mentee’s development. Should the two work out an agreement for additional mentor times, there is no concern as long as there is no issue between the mentee and mentor.
Termination of the Relationship
The Mentor relationship can be terminated at any time, at the request of either party.
